Built in 1632 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Semi precious stones including lapis lazuli, malachite, mother of pearl, and others were used to decorate the Taj Mahal, using the Florentine style known as pietra dura.
