Campidoglio
The Camidoglio by day, Rome. In Roman times the temples of Jupiter and Juno Moneta were located on the Capitoline hill. The Piazza was designed by Michelangelo in 1538 and is one of Rome's most beautiful squares. Three palazzi border the square - the Palazzo Nuovo to the left, the Palazzo Senatorio straight ahead and the Palazzo dei Conservatori to the right. At the center is the bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. On either side of the Cordonata, or stepped ramp, giant statues of Castor and Pollux (the mythical horse Tamers) stand holding their mounts.
